Industrial Wastewater Discharge and Compliance Investigation for Environmentally Resilient Rwanda

While Rwanda is aiming at environmental pollution resilience and green growth, some industries are still discharging untreated effluent into the environment. This study gives a general overview of compliance level industrial discharge in linked negative impacts. It comprises qualitative quantitative analyses data obtained from wastewater samples collected five selected Rwanda. The had previously been audited monitored by Environment Management Authority (REMA), due to complains neighboring residents. found that treatment plants (WWTP) for all concerned failed comply with (i) oil grease (O&G) national international tolerable parameter limits or (ii) fecal coliforms standard. In addition, 66.7% was observed key water quality monitoring parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical demand (BOD), chemical (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), heavy metals (i.e., lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr)). Following these findings, one industry closed REMA deliberately an adjacent river. recommends adoption best available technology treatment, installation renovation existing WWTPs, relocation zones fragile environments.
